Another medal ensured, again a woman, this time Lovlina in boxing

Boxer Lovlina Borgohain assured India of its second medal at the Tokyo Olympics after beating former world champion Chen Nien-Chin of Chinese Taipei in the quarter-final of the Women’s Welterweight boxing in 69kg category at the Kokukigan Arena on Friday.

Lovlina dominated the match since the start and out-punched her senior opponent by 4-1 in the last round of the match. She had won the first round by 3-2 and continued bossing the second round as well with 5-0.

Lovlina qualified for the semi-finals and hence is assured of at least a bronze medal. Lovlina would be the second Indian female boxer after Mary Kom to win a medal for India at the Olympics and third overall including Vijender Singh.

Meanwhile, shuttler PV Sindhu also defeated Mia Blichfeldt in straight games to advance to the quarter-finals of women’s singles where she’ll be facing Akane Yamaguchi of Japan.

Indian men’s hockey team also gave a confident performance by beating defending champions Argentina 3-1, and confirmed quarter-final berth.
