Arnab was told he would spend his Diwali in jail, alleges Harish Salve

In a shocking revelation, senior advocate Harish Salve said that Republic Media Network’s editor Arnab Goswami was threatened and warned during his questioning.  Harish Salve is representing Arnab before the Supreme Court and he told the court that his client was told, “You abused us, you will spend Diwali in jail.”

The Supreme Court on Friday also issued a notice to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly assistant secretary asking him to explain why contempt should not be issued against him in terms of Article 129 of the constitution.

The Court said the “intention” of the Assembly officer appeared to be to “intimidate” Goswami because he “approached this court” and to “threaten him with a penalty for seeking legal remedy”, the bench of Chief Justice of India SA Bobde and Justices AS Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian directed that Goswami cannot be arrested in the privilege matter until further orders.

The hearing of Goswami’s interim bail plea in connection to his arrest over a 2018 abetment of suicide case remained incomplete in Bombay High Court on Friday. The court will continue to hear his petition today at 12 pm.

Arnab Goswami was forcefully dragged and arrested by police personnel on Wednesday under section 306 of the IPC in a death-suicide case.  The case was reopened having been closed last year. Arnab’s side claims he was neither served prior summons nor allowed to access his legal team.
