By-polls in 54 assembly and 1 parliamentary seat in 10 states in November





The Election Commission on Tuesday announced the by-election for 54 assembly constituencies and one Parliamentary constituency across 10 states to be scheduled for November 3 and 7, respectively.

Two assembly constituencies in Manipur will go to polls along with the Parliamentary constituency in Bihar on November 7. Counting of votes will be held on November 10, the panel of officials said.

By-elections on 56 assembly constituency across states include 28 from Madhya Pradesh, 8 from Gujarat, 7 from Uttar Pradesh, 2 each from Jharkhand, Nagaland, Karnataka, Manipur, and Odisha. One each from Chhattisgarh, Haryana, and Telangana will also go on polls on November 3.

The commission has also decided not to hold a by-election to seven constituencies in four states – two each from Assam, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu and one from Bengal. The elections in these states will be held early next year.

While the graph of coronavirus doesn’t seem to flatten any soon, Election Commissioner, Sunil Arora said that life has to go on.

He also assured that the commission is taking all the necessary actions to avoid any physical contact and has released an elaborate list of dos and don’ts. They have also taken Covid-19 patients into considerations and have come up with an extra hour reserved exclusively for coronavirus patients.

Last week, the Election Commission announced the dates for the assembly elections in Bihar- scheduled in three phases- October 28, November 3, and 7. The counting of these will be held on November 10.
