Congress joins hand with AIUDF and Left in Assam

In another attempt to upstage the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party, Congress in Assam on Tuesday announced a pre-poll alliance with Badruddin Ajmal led All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), Ancholik Gana Morcha (AGM) and the left parties to form a ‘Maha Gathbandhan’ (Grand Alliance) of opposition parties to defeat the incumbent BJP government.

Assam Congress President Ripun Bora announcing this said the other regional parties are welcome to join the grand alliance.

“The Congress is always keen to oust all communal forces for the best interest of the country. People are ready to vote out the BJP as its mis-governance caused a lot of distress to the people, who have become fed up with the BJP,” he said.

Following the announcement, Congress in-charge of Assam, Jitendra Singh said the parties have come together to save the ‘culture and identity’ of the state from the ‘divisive politics’ of the BJP. He asserted that the alliance would win in the Assembly polls.

All the while, BJP is confident of returning to power. Party spokesperson Roopam Goswami termed the “three Cs – Congress, communists and communal (AIUDF) an unholy alliance.” He claimed that the Congress and AIUDF had secret understandings in previous polls and voters in Assam had rejected them. This time too, the voters would reject the official alliance and repose faith in the BJP, Goswami added.
