Delhi riots: Charge sheet filed today; Umar Khalid’s name missing

Delhi Police Special Cell has filed a charge sheet against 15 accused in northeast Delhi riots under UAPA (Unlawful Activities Prevention Act) at the Karkardooma Court here.

The charge sheet, which runs in over 10,000 pages, has Tahir Hussain as main accused in the case. The charge sheet however doesn’t have the name of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam as yet since they were arrested a few days ago. Their names would be included in the supplementary charge sheet.

The police have accused Khalid of instigating riots and urging them to come to streets.

Delhi Police has included in the evidence WhatsApp chats of February 24, the time when riots took place. They have further said that the key conspirators were guiding food soldiers during the riots. “25 WhatsApp groups were specially created for each site. Police has identified each group and its role,” police said.

A copy of the charge sheet would be provided to all the accused in the case.

The riots staged in February resulted in 53 deaths and over 200 injured.

Delhi Police chief SN Shrivastava has said that the charge sheet is based on documentary evidence.

“Delhi Police has examined a large majority of persons who either have a role in Northeast Delhi riots or have information that will help arrive at the truth. It has questioned persons without regard to their religion and party affiliation. It has collected documentary evidence including scientific evidence to support its case. The specific details, understandably cannot be shared at this stage. It has arrested 1,571 persons irrespective of their caste or religion.”
