Dhankhar tears into Mamata: Does she want to destroy all Constitutional institutions?

West Bengal governor Jagdeep Dhankhar has hit back strongly at chief minister Mamata Banerjee after the latter alleged he was a corrupt man, charge-sheeted in the Jain Hawala case.

Dhankhar claimed he was never charge-sheeted and said the allegation was “far from the facts…plain and simple untruth…misinformation.”

“Your Governor has not been charge-sheeted. There is no such document. This is misinformation. I didn’t expect this from a senior politician. I have not taken stay from any Court in hawala charge sheet because there was none,” the West Bengal Governor said.

Addressing a press conference on June 28, Mamata Banerjee lashed out at the Governor, saying, “He is a corrupted man. He is a corrupted man, I am sorry to say – all corruption-oriented man. Why should a Central government allow a Governor like this? …He was charge-sheeted in the hawala Jain case, and later it was cleared by the court.”

Quashing the accusations against him, Governor Dhankhar, in his press conference, said, “The entire world knows, no one has been convicted in the hawala case. You know who are the people charge-sheeted. You know their names. This is far from facts, it is a plain and simple untruth. This is misinformation. I did not expect this from a seasoned politician. I have not taken any stay from any court in the hawala chargesheet because there was none.”

Jagdeep Dhankhar also took a swipe at the government over the continuing post-poll political violence in Bengal. “This is nothing but authoritarianism. It is not governance in accordance with the Constitution. This is not rule of law,” he said.

He also brought to light the ‘missing’ report of the alleged ‘pandemic scam’ wherein nearly Rs 200 crore had been spent without any record.

“Did she get the mandate to destroy every constitutional institution? I shall not cave in, come what may. I will bow down to the Constitution of India. I don’t have feet of clay, Constitution has empowered me spinally and I will do all I can in my command to serve the people of West Bengal,” Dhankhar said unapologetically.

Jain Hawala Case was a huge political and financial scandal in the 1990s in which money routed through hawala channels was claimed to have been given to top politicians across various parties. Those accused included LK Advani, VC Shukla, Devi Lal, Sharad Yadav, Balram Jakhar and Madan Lal Khurana.

However, the court did not find any incriminating evidence against the accused and were thereby acquitted.
