India shuts down consulate in Kandahar; evacuate 50 diplomats

India temporarily shut down its Indian consulate in Kandahar on Saturday and evacuated 50 Indian diplomats by a special flight after the US troops pulled out of Afghanistan.

As Taliban has increased its hold in the mountainous country, claiming 85 per cent of Afghanistan, India made the move even though its embassy in Kabul is still operational.

The ongoing violence in Afghanistan is claiming up to 600 people everyday and Afghanistan president Ashraf Ghani has blamed Taliban for it.

Besides, addressing a gathering in Khost province, Ghani said that Taliban should not accept the Durand Line as the official border between Pakistan and Afghanistan, as desired by Pakistan. The Durand Line is 2,670km international border between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

“Taliban should be asked whom they are fighting for? Who will benefit if Afghanistan is ruined and if Afghans are killed?” Ghani said according to Tolo News.

With the US and NATO troops almost out of the country, the Taliban is coming close to re-establishing the Islamic Emirate in Afghanistan.

US President Joe Biden has said that the US military mission in Afghanistan will end on August 31, which is widely perceived as the US defeat in Afghanistan.

“We are ending America’s longest war. I will not send another generation of Americans to war in Afghanistan. We did not go to Afghanistan to nation-build,” said Biden.
