J & K retrieve land worth over Rs 100 crores from encroachers

The Housing and Urban Development Department of Jammu and Kashmir government has retrieved land worth over Rs 100 crore in Gandhi Nagar, considered a prime area, in Jammu city. Dheeraj Gupta, Principal Secretary of the department, led the anti-encroachment drive with the help of civil administration and a heavy contingent of police.

Gupta said later that the land belonged to J&K Housing Board and the action has been taken to evict the encroachers. He added that action will be taken soon against other encroachers also as the “government is committed to removal of each and every encroacher from government lands”.

The top official of the department himself leading the anti-encroachment drive is meant to send a strong message to all encroachers. In the days to come, it is expected that encroachers may face a tough time all over the Union Territory (UT).

Incidentally, the J&K High Court had passed tough orders in October against encroachers squatting on government lands. In another case, it had ordered eviction against forest land encroachers. In this case, by use of ordinary anti-encroachment laws, the administration perhaps wants to convey that all encroachments will be got vacated.
