Major drop in US church attendance, membership: Gallup poll

The membership to American church and attendances are suffering a major fall, a recent poll has found out. It’s below 50% for the first time.

In the year 2020, 47% of Americans replied in affirmative, down from 50% in 2018 and 70% in 2019.

Gallup, the polling agency, has collected the church attendance date for the past eight decades, beginning 1940. Just after the second World War, the figure had reached 76%, highest to date. But now, in the past 20 years, it has fallen alarmingly low.

Some of the questions Gallup asked were: “Do you happen to be a member of a church, synagogue, or mosque?”

Church membership was found to be biggest amongst people born before 1946 at 66%, dropping to 58% amongst the Baby Boomer generation, 50% amongst Gen X, and finally dramatically collapsing to just 36% amongst millennials. However, there is still a numerical decline in each age group, irrespective of gender, location or political affiliation.

As per Gallup, the survey was compiled from 6,117 randomly sampled adults in all 50 states of the United States, including the capital Washington DC. Interviews on phone were held throughout 2018-2020.
