No relief for Trinamool Congress leaders by Calcutta High Court on Narada scam

The Calcutta High court on Wednesday remained inconclusive while hearing the case concerning the arrest of Trinamool Congress party leaders, Firhad Hakim, Subrata Mukherjee, Madan Mitra, and Sovan Chatterjee in the Narada Sting case, making the leaders remain in the custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

On Monday the special CBI court, where the four accused were produced virtually by the CBI had granted them interim bail. But hours later, the CBI approached a division bench of Calcutta High Court, which after hearing the matter, issued a stay on the interim bail.

“As during the period when the arguments were heard, the order was passed by the court below, we deem it appropriate to stay that order and direct that the accused persons shall be treated to be in judicial custody till further orders,” the high court had stated on Monday night.

The accused then filed a recall application seeking a recall of the May 17 order. The Calcutta High Court heard both the stay on the interim bail and the review petition today however concluded it without any order. The hearing will resume on Thursday at 2 pm.

The CBI office in West Bengal witnessed high drama on Monday when the CBI arrested the Transport and Housing Minister Firhad Hakim; Panchayat Minister Subrata Mukherjee; MLA and former minister Madan Mitra and former Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee in the Narada Sting case in which a tape was released ahead of the 2016 Assembly polls in the state, and several TMC ministers, MPs and MLAs were seen taking money from representatives of a fictitious company in exchange of promised favours.
