Maharashtra police have taken a three-member reporting team of Republic Media Network into custody, their names being video journalist Yashpaljit Singh, reporter Anuj Kumar, and Ola cab driver Pradeep Dilip Dhanavade.
They have been sent into four-day custody without any legal representation being allowed to them. The reporting team was on an investigative assignment in Karjat, Raigad.
The reporting team was arrested after they had made an enquiry with a security guard of a certain residence. They have been charged under sections of trespassing, as per a report on the digital platform of the news network. The report alleges that its reporter is being pressurized to reveal the source of the story.
The network asserts that every citizen has the right to move freely within the country under Article 19 (D). Further, a citizen can’t be illegitimately be deprived of his life or personal liberty, as enshrined in the Constitution of India under Article 21. Or a journalist can’t pursue a story in Karjat, or near the Chief Minister’s home. They are now to cool their heels in the prison for four days without any legal representation.
