As several states in India have run out of vaccines against Covid-19, the Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII) has decided to begin vaccine production outside India to meet supply commitments.

Its CEO Adar Poonawalla mentioned that their company is going to make an official announcement regarding this in the next few days.

The pharma giant manufactures the AstraZeneca covid-19 vaccine, Covishield.

Earlier this week , he mentioned that the Serum Institute would be able to raise its monthly output to 100 million doses by July, later than a previous timeline of end-May.

He also said they hope to increase the Institute's production capacity from 2.5 billion to 3 billion doses a year within six months.
