Why are you carrying ‘parallel debates’? SC to Pegasus petitioners

The Supreme Court expressed its displeasure over what it called “parallel debates” on social media by the petitioners seeking probe into the Pegasus spyware row. The Supreme Court said there must be some discipline and petitioners must have “some faith in the system”.

It observed that instead of having a “parallel proceeding or parallel debate”, whatever the petitioners want to say, they can file an affidavit in the court and the bench would go through each and every content.

“Why have parallel debates? Whatever you are saying in the media… whatever queries are to be answered… Once you come to this court, we expect the debate is taking place (here) and we expect they (the government) will answer the questions we put to them,” the Chief Justice N.V. Ramana said.

When the solicitor general Tushar Mehta, representing the state requested for more time to read the petitions and respond, the court postponed the hearing to Monday. Mehta told the bench, “I have received the copies (of the petitions). I need instructions from the centre…need time till Friday.”

Meanwhile it must be noted that the Opposition is also demanding a detailed discussion however, it is not letting the Central government speak with continuous protest. Despite the fact that government has insisted that no illegal surveillance has been conducted, the opposition has been making it difficult for the ruling party to function in the parliament.
